Update: Due to numerous requests the SOCOMS full-paper submission deadlines have been extended to November 22, 2010.

Social computing is concerned with the study of social behavior and social context based on computational systems. Behavioral modeling reproduces the social behavior, and allows for experimenting, scenario planning, and deep understanding of behavior, patterns, and potential outcomes. The pervasive use of computer and Internet technologies provides an unprecedented environment of various social activities. Social computing facilitates behavioral modeling in model building, analysis, pattern mining, and prediction. Numerous interdisciplinary and interdependent systems are created and used to represent the various social and physical systems for investigating the interactions between individuals, groups, or nation-states. This requires an interdisciplinary effort leveraging the state-of-the-art research to create a better understanding of the problems from different perspectives in order to document lessons learned and develop novel theories, experiments, and methodologies in terms of social, physical, psychological, and governmental mechanisms.
This special issue is interdisciplinary and provides a platform for researchers, and practitioners from sociology, behavioral science, computer science, psychology, cultural study, information systems, operations research to share and develop novel concepts, models, principles, simulations, and methodologies, aiming to bridge the gaps between paradigms, encourage interdisciplinary collaborations, advance and deepen our understanding of social and behavioral computing and evaluation in helping critical decision and policy making.

Areas of Interests
Articles are solicited on research issues, theories, and applications.
Topics of interests include, but are not limited to,
Social role identification and prediction
Influence process and recognition
Detection of hidden relationships
Public opinion representation
Psycho-cultural situation awareness
Search, data, and inference
Group formation and evolution
Analytic approaches
Cultural patterns and representation
Simulation methodology
Social conventions and social contexts
Tools and case studies
Causal and non-linear relationships
Metrics and evaluation
Modeling, projection, and forecasting
Social behaviors (norms, self-organizing, cooperation)
Social network analysis and mining
Viral marketing and information diffusion
Group interaction and collaboration
Data collection and benchmarks
Group representation and profiling
Social dynamics and infectious disease modeling
Cultural modeling and dynamics
Model and analysis complexity

Special Issue on Multimedia Data Annotation and Retrieval using Web 2.0

Introduction
Currently, more than 80% of the information exchanged on the Web carry personal data and are primarily of multimedia nature (video, audio, images, etc.). Two main reasons are behind this phenomenon: 1) each of the major players on the Internet (individual users, companies, local and/or regional authorities, etc.) is both data producer and data consumer at the same time, and 2) the use of various tools of Web 2.0 (blogs, social networks, etc.) allows to ease sharing, accessing, and publishing information on the Web. While such tools provide users many easy-to-use functionalities, several issues, however, remain unaddressed. For instance, how to automate the processes of annotation and description of some photos using the annotations/descriptions provided by the user friends on his/her blog/wiki/social network? How to provide the user with more effective and expressive means to multimedia information retrieval? How to protect a multimedia data repository (e.g., photo album) while several related information about the same content is already published (by some user friends) on the same or other blog/wiki/social network? The general aim of this special issue is to assess the current approaches and technologies, as well as to outline the major challenges and future perspectives, related to the use of Web 2.0 in providing automatic annotation and easing retrieval and access control of multimedia data. It aims to provide an overview of the state of the art and future directions in this field, by including a wide range of interdisciplinary contributions from various research groups.

Topics
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:
* Semantic Web and Web 2.0
* Social Networks
* Multimedia Semantics
* Contextual Multimedia Metadata
* Annotation Enriching
* Query Rewriting
* Metadata Modeling and Contextual Ontologies for Multimedia Applications
* Management of Multimedia Metadata (Relational and XML Databases, Semantic Stores, etc.)
* Multimedia Authoring
* Multimedia-based Access Control and Authorization
* Multimedia Retrieval
* Personalizing Multimedia Content
* Cross-media Clustering
* Mobile Applications
* Multimedia Web Applications and Related Metadata Support
* Novel and Challenging Multimedia Applications

Important Dates
Submission Deadline: November 20, 2010 (extended deadline)
Notification of First Round of Review: January 30, 2011
Submission of the Revised Manuscript: March 15, 2011
Notification of Final Acceptance: April 30, 2011
Camera-ready Submission: May 30, 2011

Submission
Authors are invited to submit contributions at the journal Online Submission System (http://www.editorialmanager.com/mtap) not exceeding 8000 words (approx. 20 pages single-spaced) including diagrams and references with at least 10-point Times Roman like font. All submissions will undergo a blind peer review by at least three external expert reviewers to ensure a high standard of quality. Referees will consider originality, significance, technical soundness, clarity of exposition, and relevance to the special
issue topics above. Since a “blind” paper evaluation method will be used, authors are kindly requested to produce and provide the full paper, WITHOUT any reference to any of the authors. The manuscript must contain, in its first page, the paper title, an abstract and a list of keywords but NO NAMES OR CONTACT DETAILS WHATSOEVER are to be included in any part of this file.

The work is part of a collaborative project, supported by the Network and Images Technological Research Cluster (pôle de compétitivité Images & Reseaux), and local industrial partners, in the field of professionnal on-line social networks (such as LinkedIn etc…). The goal of the work is to design, implement and evaluate novel techniques (models, algorithms, criteria) for recommending people and content, and identifying communities from user profiles. A particularity of the task is that it should jointly exploit several existing on-line social networks (supplying the data is under the responsibility of another project partner).
The task will very probably have opportunities to relate to ongoing work in our group, pertaining to privacy-preserving technologies (k-anonymity).
CALL FOR PAPERS

The Urban Data Management Society has organised international symposia at various locations throughout Europe since 1971, and UDMS 2011 will mark its 40th anniversary. For this anniversary the Board of UDMS has decided to hold the conference in Delft, The Netherlands, a city and a country we have called home for many years. For this symposium the Board has decided to call attention to the 40 years of UDMS, certain that this is an experience not to be found elsewhere and a valuable basis on which to form planning for the future. Consequently the general theme chosen of UDMS 2011 is UDMS at 40 years: making contributions to the future As in the UDMS tradition we will provide a forum in which representatives from local authorities, universities, research centers and professionals can join together to discuss new approaches, to consider new technologies, and to share practical experiences in the field of urban and regional data management. UDMS 2011 will include dynamic Discussion Working Sessions in which academics, representatives from local authorities and professionals will discuss relevant topics and problems for which solutions are required. The results of the discussion will be presented by a rapporteur in a final session. These sessions will facilitate the effective creation of collaboration and synergies between participants in addition to the conventional Sientific and Technical Sessions. Representatives from local authorities in Europe will be invited to participate to the conference and take part to the Discussion Working Sessions.

The organising committee invites you to submit a paper for presentation and to take part in this important event. Three types of submissions will be considered:
- Scientific papers up to 6000 words, for full paper peer review by three reviewers.
- Technical papers up to 3000 words presenting new solutions, review of potential new technologies and project results, for abstract review
- Technical papers, especially from local authorities and professionals, presenting the description of experiences, solutions or problems requiring solutions, for abstract review
All accepted papers will be orally presented at the conference.
Scientific papers and a selection of Technical papers will be printed in the UDMS proceedings that will be published by Taylor & Francis as a hardbound book.

The three best of papers in each category will receive an award of recognition. The International Programme Committee would like to receive proposals addressing the following symposium areas and topics:

UDM Technical Issues:
- 3D for municipalities and citizens: reconstruction, processing, analysis & visualisation
- Systems and sensors for monitoring urban and regional environments
- Semantic web for urban applications
UDM Practitioner issues:
- Cooperation among local authorities in urban data management
- Lessons learned from 40 years of experience and their future application
- Impacts & implications of social networks/twitter Google Earth and other internet services to government IT/data production/distribution/use
- Uses and applications of UDM among local and national governments
Other topics can be addressed provided that the relation with the overall theme is demonstrated.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Full scientific paper submission deadline: December 6, 2010
Abstract technical paper submission deadline December 13, 2010
Notification of acceptance: March 28, 2011
Final papers delivered by: May 30, 2011
UDMS 2011 in Delft September, 28-30, 2011

SUBMISSION:
Paper submission instructions can be found on the UDMS website, www.udms.net.
Participants will be expected to provide full papers and abstracts by the above referenced dates.
Following review the notification of acceptance will be accompanied by suggestions for revisions for the final paper. The website submission portal will be available by the end of September 2010.
Submitting a paper will be considered as pre-registration.
Authors will be required to register and commit to participation.

Papers will be written and presented in English.
